Layout of the Main Window

The main window in Maestro consists of the following areas, many of which can be displayed or undisplayed from the Display menu.

The title bar is at the top, and displays the Maestro version, the project name, and the Maestro current working directory.

The main menu bar runs horizontally below the title bar. It provides access to the panels in Maestro. The menus that are available are Maestro, Project, Edit, View, Workspace, Tools, Applications, Tasks, Workflows, Scripts, Window, and Help.

Below the main menu bar, by default, are toolbars that provide access to many common functions. You can move toolbars by dragging their "handle" (the dotted strip on the left or top of the toolbar) to one of the sides of the main window, or outside the main window.

Below the toolbars or the main menu bar is the Workspace, which is where all structures are displayed.

In the lower right of the Workspace is the Clipping Planes window. The horizontal lines are clipping planes and can be manipulated with the mouse. This window provides a "top view" of the Workspace.

Immediately below the Workspace is the status bar, which gives information about what is displayed in the Workspace.

Below the status bar is the sequence viewer, which displays the sequences of any proteins that are displayed in the Workspace.

Below the sequence viewer is the command input area. This text box, labeled Commands, allows you to enter text commands. This is an alternative to doing things graphically in Maestro. Most commands result in some sort of graphical feedback. For information on the available commands, see the Maestro Command Reference Manual.

Along the foot of the panel is the context-sensitive help or Auto-Help text area. It can also be thought of as "task completion hints". When a task requires certain actions to be executed, this box contains text describing what you need to do for that to happen.
