Manage Views Panel

Summary

In this panel you can select, save, restore, delete, import, export, play through, and record movies of views of the Workspace.

Opening the Manage Views Panel

To open the Manage Views panel, you can:

This panel is dockable, so it opens by default in the Workspace. You can change this behavior in the Preferences panel, under General – Panels.

Using the Manage Views Panel

A view of the Workspace is a combination of a particular camera angle and level of zoom. It is purely a record of the direction and magnification of whatever is in the Workspace: it contains no information about the objects in the Workspace.

Views are stored as part of the project. If you want to use a particular set of views in another project, you can export them from the current project, and import them into the other project.

You can save views by one of the following methods:

When you restore (display) a view, the Workspace is set to the camera angle and the zoom that are recorded in the view. If you then make changes to the view, these changes do not alter the values that are recorded in the last view that you restored.

You can restore a view by one of the following methods:

You can also step through views sequentially, by one of the following methods:

You can play through a set of views with a specified time delay between each view. The views that are shown can be selected from those in the Views table. You can also record a movie from the views.

Manage Views Panel Features

Views table

This table lists the views that have been saved in the project. You can select multiple rows in the table for the application of an action. You can reorder the rows by selecting multiple rows and dragging them to their new location.

Row Table row number. This value is used as the mnemonic on the Restore View submenu of the View menu.
Play Checkbox to indicate whether the view is part of the play sequence. If the box is not checked for a given view, the view is not displayed when playing through the views or stepping through the views with the Next and Previous items on the Restore View submenu of the View menu.
Name Name of the view. This column is editable. The name must be unique: you are not permitted to make it the same as that of another view.
Pause Time Length of time that the view is displayed when playing through views. Does not include animation duration.
Action buttons

These buttons perform actions on the views.

Save button

Save the current Workspace view as a named view. Opens the Save View dialog box, in which you can name the view. The name must be unique.

Restore button

Restore the Workspace to the selected view. This button is only active when a single view is selected in the Views table. You can also restore a view by double-clicking it in the table.

Delete button

Delete the views that are selected in the Views table.

Set pause times to text box

Specify the length of time duration a view is displayed when playing through views. This duration is applied to the selected views when you click Set.

Set button

Set the time duration for the selected views to the value in the Time text box.

Play controls

These controls can be used to play through the views that are checked in the Play column of the Views table. They function in the same way as the ePlayer controls. The last view played is marked in the table with a green border.

Import button

Import a set of views from an external views file (.views). Opens a file selector, in which you can navigate to and select the file. If view names conflict with those already in the project, the imported names are made unique. >

Export button

Export views to a views file (.views). The selected rows of the Views table are exported. If no rows are selected, all rows are exported. In addition to the zoom and viewing transform, the name, play state, and display duration are exported.

Record Movie button

Record a movie of a single play through the views, in MPEG format. The Workspace must already contain the structures that you want in the movie. Only the views selected for play are included in the movie. The view animation settings are applied when the movie is recorded, so that you can have a smooth transition between views.

Animation section

In this section you can set options for animation of view changes.

Select View animation to turn on this effect, in which the structure changes from one view to another over a period of time, rather than instantly. The duration of the animation can be controlled by entering a value in the Duration text box.

Animation can be turned off if the distance over which the structure moves is greater than a given threshold, by selecting Limit animation distance, and entering the distance threshold in the Maximum animation distance text box. The animation controls are the same as in the Workspace - View animation tab of the Preferences panel.

When saving views options

These options determine whether you are prompted for a view name (Prompt for name) or the default name, viewn, is used (Use default name) when you save a view.
